How much time do you spend with your family?

Be careful to project a balanced attitude here. This can be a touchy subject. You might be dealing with an interviewer who is work-oriented and who doesn't recognize the value of family or one who does. Customize your answer to strive for balance with both work and home.

Are you involved in any political groups or affiliations?

Questions regarding your political associations are irrelevant to most job offers and may be an improper question. However, try answering this question by referring to your membership in professional affiliations that relate to the position.

Are you married?

This is an illegal question and may not be asked by an interviewer or prospective employer. Questions regarding your marital status are inappropriate. You can tactfully change the topic to your qualifications or answer it. However, you may consider the context and manner in which the question is asked. You may be asked whether a family member works for the company, but otherwise you do not have to answer this question.

Do you have a savings plan?

This information should be irrelevant to the interviewer. Almost everyone has a savings plan, even if they have only one account with a minimum balance. You weren't asked if you followed your plan. So answer "yes," but be brief and to the point.

This could be a potentially illegal question if the interviewer is seeking information that might be used to discriminate against you such as religion or ethnic background.  However, the interviewer may just be seeking information to determine that you have other activities to help balance out your life. Consider your answer carefully.

Do you have any children?

It is not important for an organization to know if you have any family. However, it is your decision on how you will answer this question. Consider the context and manner in which the question is asked.

Questions regarding the age of your family are unrelated to the needs and requirements of most positions. However, this question should be viewed within the context of the overall discussion and not answered in a hostile manner.

Questions about marital status and family are improper and therefore provision for child care should not be a question you are required to answer. You may want to ask the employer why they want to know. It remains a good idea, however, to construct a positive response.

This may be an illegal question if it leads to questions about specific family members.  The employer may be trying to find out if you have children or are married. Indicate only that you have established a strong support for whatever you undertake.

This may be an illegal question. Even if you have some debt, you may not want to bring it up. Reassure the interviewer of your financial stability.

How old are you?

It is improper for an employer to ask your age unless you may be under the age of eighteen. However, when answering this question, instead of giving your age, take the opportunity to reflect on your experience and how it will enhance the position.

What is your religion?

Unless this position is with a religious affiliation, then your employer does not have the legal right to ask this question, and an answer would be inappropriate. However, you should not try to offend your interviewer with a hostile answer.

Questions regarding your ancestry, family, or national origin are usually irrelevant to your qualifications and in most cases are illegal. However, you should consider the context and manner in which this question is asked and use the question as an opportunity to promote your good qualities.

This is an illegal question to ask in a job interview and may not be asked by an interviewer or prospective employer. Questions about religion could easily lead to discrimination, which is against the law.

This is an illegal question and may not be asked by an interviewer or prospective employer.  You can only be asked if you have a reliable method of transportation to get to work.

Whether you own a house or rent, this is an illegal question and may not be asked by an interviewer or prospective employer. This question could easily lead to discrimination based on your economic status or anticipated stability.

Do you live with your parents?

Living with parents implies over-reliance on them and a lack of initiative and self-confidence. If you are living with your parents, you might indicate that you are currently looking for your own apartment, if this is the case.

Unless you have been convicted of a felony, your do not have to answer this question. Keep your response as short as possible.

It is unnecessary for a prospective employer to learn about your spouse.  However, the question may be asked only out of innocent curiosity.  It is best to get back to the subject of your qualifications.

Have you ever worked under a different name?

This question, although legal, may be used by interviewers to determine if you have been married. You do not need to offer specifics. Answer carefully and remember that any question about your maiden name or heritage could easily lead to discrimination, which is against the law.

This may be an illegal question and may not be asked by an interviewer or prospective employer. This question could easily lead to discrimination, which is against the law.  Re-assure the employer, however, that you have a right to work in the United States.  Be prepared to show proof of citizenship or a work permit if necessary.

Can I have your Social Security number?

This is an illegal question and may not be asked by an interviewer or prospective employer.  Once you have accepted employment, you will have to provide your social security number, but not before.

Tell me about your discharge from the military.

This is an illegal question and may not be asked by an interviewer or prospective employer.  Although you may be asked if you were in the military and what experience you gained there, you cannot be asked about your discharge. If your discharge was favorable however, you may want to let the employer know.

This may be an illegal question and may not be asked by an interviewer or prospective employer. This question could easily lead to discrimination, which is against the law.

When were you born?

This is an illegal question and may not be asked by an interviewer or prospective employer. Any question about age could easily lead to discrimination, which is against the law. The employer only needs to know that you are eighteen years or older.

What did you say your age was?

This is an illegal question and may not be asked by an interviewer or prospective employer. This question could easily lead to discrimination, which is against the law.
