Nutrition Guide: Macronutrients

Nutrients are substances necessary for proper bodily function.

The nutrients required in large quantities are called Macronutrients.

We can categorized the macronutrients into 4 types:

  1. Proteins
  2. Carbohydrates
  3. Fats
  4. Water

Proteins

Proteins are the basic structure of all living cells. Proteins are used in making hormones, blood plasma transport systems, and enzymes. The basic building blocks of proteins are called amino acids.

The amino acids that are not manufactured by the body and must come from dietary intade are are called Essential Amino Acids. The amino acids that the body can manufacture from the by-products of carbohydrate metabolism are called Non-Essential Amino Acids.

Amino Acids are crucial for proper Central Nervous System function.
