Resume Self Assessment

You must understand why a resume self assessment is important. Before starting to write your résumé, you must prepare yourself and gather some information.

Like anything you'll try to do in life, you need to prepare it. Preparation is the most important step for you at this point. Seeing you here on this website, reading this page, is already a proof that you are serious and committed to make a difference!

You are looking for a job, what you are selling here is yourself! So, like any salesman need to know its product, you need to know yourself. No mistake or second thought allowed here. If you know yourself, you'll be able to highlight your best marketable skills, as well as you past and current achievement, and support them!

Remember, you are more marketable in a field that you excel in AND that you enjoy!

So let's start. Get yourself seated, and take a pen and sheet of paper. Now, answer the following questions:

  • What are you good at? write down all the answers that come to you.

  • What do you enjoy doing? Write down all the answers that come to you too.

Now, sort out from your lists, the things that you are good at AND that you enjoy. Select the 2-3 best of those and you got it: these are your best marketable skills!

You now know which points you have to highlight in your résumé!

The next step is now to prove your skills with your achievements. So answer the following questions:

  • What achievements prove the 2-3 best marketable skills you listed above? Write at least 3 things that you did and that you’re proud of and THEIR RESULTS.

  • What have you done to increase productivity, profits, efficiency, sales, etc.? Use facts, figures, years and be as specific as possible. Your achievements can be from paid or volunteer employment, school projects or even hobbies. As long as they’re relevant to the work you want to do, you may include them in your résumé.

Take as much time as you need to answer those questions, and make sure that you are fully honest with yourself!

Trying to invent yourself some skills or achievement won't help you, soon or later you'll pay the price. You may end up in a position where you'll find yourself having responsibilities that you can't handle, or found as a fraud, end of your working career.
